NCRA delivers to you - feminist salon!

From the marriage anxieties of the five Bennet sisters in Pride and Prejudice, to the fantastical and unsettling science-fictional imagination of Frankenstein; from the tension Jane Eyre poses between female independence and the pursuit of love, to George Eliot's portrayal in Middlemarch of the choices and constraints facing women in the real world; from Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness — one of the earliest novels to openly depict romantic and emotional bonds between women — to Virginia Woolf's argument in A Room of One's Own that women must have a space to call their own.

The women writers of nineteenth-century Britain stepped, one by one, into the world of literature — taking up the pen, awakening in consciousness — and across this century, a road both rugged and radiant unfurled before them, a women's literary tradition blazing into being, kindling a fire of thought and word that belonged, at last, to women alone.

On Tuesday, March 24th, we will be hosting a literary salon at the University of Sydney, centred on 19th-century British women writers — an evening of storytelling, sharing, and discussion about their words and their lives.
